Goroka Cultural Show -September
14 Days / 13 Nights
Day 1: Sept Meals- Sept S Dinner only-
Upon arrival in Port Moresby meet at Port Moresby airport and transfer to our hotel. We gather this evening for our orientation
meeting and dinner. Overnight in Port Moresby - Laguna Hotel
Day 2: -September Meals- BLD
After breakfast transfer to the airport for your PX flight POM /HGU. Upon arrival meet and transfer to hotel. After getting
settled begin the tour of Mt. Hagen and the surrounds includes local market, Pogla village for the man's traditional dance Avi
and Kindeng tea and coffee plantations etc. Return for lunch and then after lunch tour to Paiakona village to see the chief and
his wives with little artifact collections. Return and overnight at Hotel Kimininga.
Day- 3- September Meals-BLD
After breakfast you will be driven to Tambul which is short drive out of Mt. Hagen is the small village which we'll visit for
cultural performances and displays. Should the local school be open we will spend some time visiting with the local school
children. We then visit Opiyepul village to meet the villagers and return to Mt. Hagen via Kumul Lodge. You will have your
Picnic lunch to be served at the village. After lunch we take a short drive to Lakop Hill for a view of the Kaguel / Tambul valley
and then drive back to Mt. Hagen and Overnight in Mt. Hagen.
Day 4-Sept - Meals- BLD
After breakfast begin your tour to Kumul Lodge. Upon arrival hike around the lodge. After the hiking return to the lodge for
lunch. After lunch scenic drive to Wapenamanda and stop on your way at Anji village. After the visit continue the tour to
Wapenamanda. After the visit return to Mt. Hagen and overnight at Kumul Lodge.
Day 5- Sept- Meals- BLD
After an early breakfast we begin our full day road tour to Goroka passing through the Simbu Province - densely populated
province. On your way to Goroka we take a half day exploration of the Wahgi Valley, one of Papua New Guinea's largest
valleys near Mt. Hagen. The Wahgi Valley is home to the Waghi people who live a subsistence lifestyle. The valley is
surrounded by mountains in which there is a variety of orchid, birdlife and plant life. We visit local villages, tea and coffee
plantations, (the area is famous for its coffee production), a local school and Simbu courtship ritual the Karim leg, kukim nus
courtship dance. We stop at Kunambau village which stands on a hill for a panoramic view of the Mingenge area. You will also
visit the orchid gardens and old burial sites. After the dance we continue our road transfer to Goroka.. (Pack lunch will be
served during our road transfer) We will then stop at Daulo pass for a panoramic view of the whole Goroka and the Asaro
valley. Return and overnight at Kanda Rest House.
Day 6- September- Meals-BLD
After early breakfast transfer to the show ground for the Goroka cultural show. A yearly event in Papua New Guinea, the
Goroka cultural is one of the best shows in Papua New Guinea to see some of the amazing traditional dances and tribal attire
from over 60 different tribal groups. An early morning wake-up call gets us to the show ground to see the preparations before
the formal show begins. We see the performers preparing their traditional clothing and body decorations and practicing for
their "dances. We spend the day at the Goroka cultural show Arena taking in the "sing sing" performances. Overnight at Kanda
Day 7- September - Meals-BLD
After breakfast transfer to the show ground chatting with the the dancers getting photographs from face painting to
decorations to actual performances. Spend the entire day at the show ground. Return and overnight at Kanda Rest House.
Day 8- September - Meals-BLD
After early breakfast we begin our road tour to Madang Province via Markham Valley on the Highlands Highway. The Markham
Valley is populated by the Ramu mountain people who are primarily farmers; growing cabbages, potatoes, lettuce, radishes,
cocoa and sugar cane. We will stop along the way to meet local people and to take rest breaks and stretch our legs. On our
way we stop at Balek Wildlife to see the eels and the turtles. Overnight at Jais Aben Resort.
Day 9: Sept-Meals- BLD
After breakfast tour of Madang and the surrounds includes the local market, Kalibobo light house, Haus Tumbuna, Return for
lunch and then after boat cruise of the Madang islands and then after that transfer to the airport for your PX flight
MAG/Wewak. Overnight at Inwewak Boutique hotel.
Day 10- Sept Meals-- BLD
After an early breakfast we drive to Pagwi on the Sepik River. The drive can take between 5 and 6 hours as we visit markets
and viewpoints along the way. Arriving in Pagwi we board motorized dugout canoes and travel down river to Palimbe village -
home of the crocodile cult - and set up for our next two nights in the village. On the Sepik River we will be spending 2 nights in
basic dormitory accommodation (bush longhouses) with limited bathing and toilet facilities. Each person will have a foam
mattress with sheets and a pillow with pillowcase as well as a mosquito net. Overnight at Kanagamun village.
Day 11- September - Meals- BLD
After breakfast tour of the middle Sepik River villages includes Kamanabit, Mindibit and Palimbe villages. Return and overnight
Kanganamun Guest House. Note: We will not be able to visit Aibom and the Chambri Lakes, as the water level is low at this
stage due to dry weather along the Sepik. If the water level rises we will be able to visit Aibom and the Chambri Lakes.
Overnight at Kanganamun Guest House
Day 12- September - Meals- BLD
After breakfast transfer back to Wewak and on the way stop at Korogu Haus Tambran to visit the Haus Tambran and then
continue to Wewak. Overnight at Inwewak Boutique hotel.
Day 13- September - Meals- BLD
Very early in the transfer hotel to the airport for your PX flight Wewak/POM. Upon arrival begin he tour of POM city that
includes the Sogeri Plateau, not far from Port Moresby, to see Rouna Falls. At a higher elevation than Port Moresby, the Sogeri
Plateau is much greener and cooler. We have time to enjoy the fabulous views down to the coast and of Port Moresby, and
the beautiful Rouna Falls before visiting the Bomana WW II cemetery. Outside view of the National Parliament house, Botanical
gardens, PNG Arts. In the afternoon transfer to Overnight in Port Moresby-Loloata Island Resort
Day 14- Sept - Meals- Breakfast only
We say a fond farewell to this fascinating and beautiful country as we transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
