Clothing & Equipment for Adventure Trip
The following list of clothing and equipment is the maximum that you are likely to need for few days adventure trip.

Please note the following;

- Do not bring too much! You will be traveling to remote areas by small aircraft with limited spaces. Accordingly, there are strict baggage weight requirements on some of these flights. We recommend no more than 10 kg per person. Excess luggage can be stored at the Trans Niugini office in Port Moresby.
- Ensure luggage is tagged (inside and outside) with your name and address.
- It is important that you hand - carry a daypack with you containing all important items such as passport, tickets, credit cards, money, medicines, camera, etc.
- Please pack clothes into strong plastic bags for protection from water.

Important note for women:

If you wear tight fitting or skimpy clothes you will offend local people and cause problems for us. Please pack to dress conservatively remember in particular to have clothes that cover the thighs. Men should also dress conservatively - no tight - fitting running shorts.
- Dress in PNG is casual, including at most hotels and lodges.
- Washing can be done in most hotels. We recommend versatile clothing that can be worn in both the bush and town.

Clothing
Shirts: 2 cotton long - sleeved (for protection from sun and insects)
4 cotton short - sleeved or t - shirts
Sweater: warm woolen sweater or jacket for high altitude areas
Trousers: 2 long pants or jeans
2 loose fitting shorts, or skirts for women
Laplap: 1 cotton sarong or laplap to change under, and for sun protection.

Recommended for both men and women. It is not appropriate to swim in western style bathing costumes alone. Have shorts or a sarong which you can swim in.

Casual clothing: 1 smart set for international flights and hotel wear
Footwear: 1 pair hiking boots
1 pair of running shoes with good grip soles
1 pair of sandals or thongs or tevas
Sock: 2 thin cotton pairs, 2 pairs woolen for treks
Underwear: normal quantity
Towel: 1 lightweight
Rainwear: make sure it is waterproof and covers your bum
Sunhat: with wide brim essential for sun protection

Equipment
Backpack: with frame for hard backpacking trips.
Dufflebag: with shoulder strap is fine for other, shorter trips.
These packs easier in planes, canoes.
Daypack: to carry daily essentials.
Sleeping bag: lightweight and compact for all Highlands treks.
Sleeping sheet: cotton sheet to keep sleeping bag clean, and for hot conditions on the Sepik and coast.
Sleeping mat: closed cell is sufficient: self - inflatable are more comfortable and more expensive.
Mosquito nets: are supplied.

Accessories
- Toilet kit - Toothbrush, toothpaste, comb or brush, soap, alcohol wipes (for hands), etc.
- Water bottle at least 1 litre (larger capacity recommended for hard treks).
- Sunglasses, sunhat, sun block, lip screen.
- Insect Repellent.
- Spare contact lenses and glasses (if required).
- First aid kit: containing personal medications only (include some band aids,antibiotic cream, antimalarial, antibiotics, diarrhea treatment, aspirin for headaches.
- Iodine tablets or similar for water treatment - essential.
- Flashlight with spare batteries/bulb.
- Money belt.
- 10 medium plastic bags or zipplock bags for packing clothes and camera inside backpack camera and plenty of film (film is difficult to obtain and expensive in PNG and everyone uses twice as much as they expect to).
- Umbrella - fold down variety - useful for protection against sun.
- Diving mask and snorkel (for visitors to the coast - diving equipment can be hired at some locations in PNG).
- Notebook and pen, book.
- Snack food: a bag of glucose sweets or similar.
- Earplugs: very useful in some villages when you need a good nights sleep.
- Binoculars: compact binoculars are excellent for bird watching.
- Other: if you wish to participate in a two - way exchange with local people and as an alternative to tipping, bring pictures of home and family, or pens and paper4 for school children, or old t - shirts, etc.

General information on conditions
- Highland regions generally have a temperature range of 12-28 degrees Celsius.
- Rain is more likely to occur in the afternoon than the morning.
- During the day, shorts and long or short - sleeved shirt or T - shirts are generally more comfortable. A light sweater in the evening and a medium sleeping bag are required in Highlands areas. On Mt. Wilhelm and other New Guinea mountains temperature drop to freezing and extra warmth is required.
- On the Sepik and in coastal areas it is very hot. No more than the lightest summer wear is required. In these areas the main consideration in being cool and protected from the sun (and mosquitoes on the Sepik).
- Shorts and T - shirts are coolest but skirt/laplap/sarong provide better protection.

Special requirements
The worst time for mosquitoes is February to May. Come prepared! Clothes that cover the body and are heavy without being hot are the best option.
- The rainy season is December through to April in most areas.
- Leeches are found on some of our harder treks. The best protection is good boots with sewn - in tongues that lace up tightly around the ankle, worn, with two pairs of lightly colored knee - high socks.
- Sunburn is a threat anywhere in PNG. Good hats are essential.
- Chafe can be a painful problem on hard treks. Comfortable walking trousers and petroleum jelly are the best preventative.
- Fleas can occur especially in the Highlands. Bring any medication.

For sea kayaking trips, please note the following:
- Good sunglasses with safety strap, wide - brimmed hat with strap, and plastic bags for packing clothes are essential.
- Tevas or similar are useful.
- Wind shell jacket and a light weight sweater or jackets are essential (it can be cold if there is rain and wind).
- Gloves to protect backs of hand are useful.
- Snorkeling gear can be hired from Malolo Plantation Lodge in Madang.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL PREPARATION

These trips are adventure holidays. The fitter you are, the more easily you will adjust and enjoy yourself.

The trips we offer vary in difficulty. Check the grade of your trip and the amount of walking or backing packing involved and make sure that you are in suitable physical condition.

Fitness
For treks rated moderate you should exercise regularly for at least 6 weeks before your trip or have a regular form of physical activity. For hard treks you should be a physically active person with good physical health. Carriers are provided on all treks.

All forms of physical exercise such as walking running and swimming which require sustained exertion will, over a period of time, increase your strength and stamina. This will increase your resistance to fatigue and sickness. So make the effort and enjoy your trip more!

Mental preparation
We wish to take you on an adventure into a place and among people whose lives are different from your own. In the short time you are here you will encounter some of Papua New Guinea's 750 linguistic and cultural groups. You will find the people look different, speak different and have a totally different outlook on life. These are certain to be aspects of PNG life you find unusual - that is one of the major reasons for coming.

Remember, the trek rating also takes into account physical discomfort. All our trips use pit toilets in the bush, we wash in streams or rivers and sleep in village houses with little privacy and the minimum of home comforts. Be mentally prepared!!

When traveling in a developing country like PNG, do not expect things to always happen on time or in the ways you expect. The country is serviced by modern facilities, however, these may not be what you are accustomed to, and delays do sometimes occur. We ask that you come with a relaxed, flexible, open - minded attitude. You are a guest in PNG and aggressive tourists are always a sorry sight. Bring a spirit of adventure and inquiry and you will enjoy and learn what Papua New Guinea has to offer.
